Nigerian teams set for Gold International

Dubai: Two outstation teams will vie against two local sides in the inaugural edition of the Gold International Football Tournament later this month.

The four-team competition will be held at the Iranian Sports Club ground with Dubai-based Dubai Diamonds FC and Dubai Irish FC contesting against Nigerian teams AbiAde FC and Golden Falcon FC.

The competition, being held under the auspices of the Dubai Shopping Festival, will run from January 31 to February 2.

"We have a vision of bringing in some of the top clubs to this tournament," stated Ahmad Mohammad Khamis, Chief Executive of Splendid Sports-Events, the organisers of the competition. "This is the best time to showcase Dubai to the world, at the same time striving to improve the quality of soccer in the country," he explained.

Tough opposition

The Dubai Irish and Golden Falcons are amateur clubs based in Dubai. "It is a great honour for our club to be asked to participate in such a competition. Obviously, it is going to be very difficult for us to play against such tough opposition," stated Conor Hayes, Manager, Dubai Irish FC.

"Our team has always concentrated on youth and we are hopeful of putting up a good performance," stated Taye Apata Emmanuel, President of Golden Falcon FC.
