| Bastakiya
situated in Bur Dubai, with its narrow
lanes, it attracts a lot of tourists,
as it exuberates the ancient and historical
feel of Dubai.
In the days before electricity and air
conditioning, Dubai Creek was lined by
a mass of wind towers that kept the local
houses cool through an ingenious employment
of air currents. The Bastakiya district
is a step back in time, laden as it is
with traditional courtyard houses, bedecked
with these uniquely Arabian wind towers.
Bastakiya has been earmarked for tourist
development, with the construction of
a museum, cultural centre, restaurant
and an art gallery that showcases local
talent. It is located east of Dubai souk
on Al Fahidi Street.
This unique part of town is worth checking
out, as it offers travelers glimpses of
what life has been like in the Old Town
since the 19th century, when Persian merchants
first moved here and "set up shop," so
to speak. Since many of these expatriates
hailed from Iran's Bastak region, this
quarter of town became know as the Bastakiya
District. Noteworthy features in the district
include its quaint, narrow lanes and ornate
wind towers, which channeled wind in order
to cool nearby homes.
After undergoing renovation and preservation,
Bastakiya has been transformed into a
tourist village complete with a cultural
center, a museum, an art gallery and restaurants.
This
is one of the oldest districts of Dubai
with its traditional wind towers that
had the effect of modern air-conditioners.

A historic building at the Bastakiya area
dating back to 1918 is in a process to
be renovated by the Dubai Municipality.
The renovation began in December 2001.
The
building will be turned into a museum
housing historic coins from the Arabic
and Islamic era. It is Dubai Municipality's
long-term plan to restore rich cultural,
heritage and architectural landmarks in
Dubai to former glory.
Dubai
Municipality is planning to renovate all
the historic buildings of the Bastakiya
area to open more museums, galleries,
restaurants and traditional markets. The
building consists of two floors and one
of two entrances is located in the north.
The first floor consists of two bedrooms,
which have traditional windows. There
is a kitchen, separate bathrooms for the
bedrooms and two storerooms, one in each
floor. There is a large room on the upper
story, which includes traditional windows,
a hall and a bathroom.
